  • Political consultant behind fake Biden robocalls faces $6 million fine and criminal charges - A political consultant who sent artificial intelligence-generated robocalls mimicking President Joe Biden’s voice to voters ahead of New Hampshire’s presidential primary faces a $6 million fine and more than two dozen criminal charges. The company accused of transmitting the calls, Lingo Telecom, faces a $2 million fine, though in both cases the parties could settle or further negotiate, the FCC said.

  • OpenAI is really, really trying to show it didn't copy Scarlett Johansson's voice - "Sky's voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress using her own natural speaking voice. To protect their privacy, we cannot share the names of our voice talents," said OpenAI. The company issued a casting call for voices last year and hired an actor to create the voice six months before OpenAI CEO first contacted Johansson, the report said.

  • Alphabet, Meta eye multimillion-dollar AI partnerships with Hollywood studios - The companies held talks with major Hollywood studios on licensing content for use in AI video generation software, and have offered tens of millions of dollars to partner with studios. Warner Bros. Discovery is reportedly interested in licensing some of its programs to train AI models, but not its entire library. Netflix & Disney are not willing to license their content, they are interested in other types of collaboration.

  • Google promised a better search experience — now it’s telling us to put glue on our pizza - Google’s AI Overviews feature went viral after suggesting using ‘about 1/8 cup of non-toxic glue’ to keep cheese from sliding off pizza. The answer received for the pizza glue query appears to be based on a comment from a user in a more than decade-old Reddit thread, and they’re clearly joking. Google is using these “isolated examples” to continue to refine the product.

  • Cohere For AI Launches Aya 23, 8 and 35 Billion Parameter Open Weights Release - Cohere For AI is excited to announce Aya 23, a new family of state-of-the-art, multilingual, generative LLM covering 23 different languages. We are releasing both the 8-billion and 35-billion parameter Aya 23 models as open weights as part of our continued commitment to multilingual research.

  • WhatsApp is testing an AI-generated profile picture feature - WhatsApp’s latest beta for Android is testing an option for AI profile pictures. The feature would enable users to generate custom profile pictures based on text descriptions. The fact that it’s already showing up on the Android beta app is a strong sign that this feature could be rolled out to all WhatsApp users soon, including those on iOS.

  • Microsoft Start gets new AI weather forecast model capabilities - Microsoft Start’s new AI forecast model capabilities have unlocked the ability for users around the globe to experience high-quality, up-to-the-minute forecasts and maps of both cloud and precipitation together while also filling in gaps for data availability.

  • Women in AI: Chinasa T. Okolo researches AI’s impact on the Global South - Chinasa T. Okolo is a fellow at the Brookings Instutition in the Center of Technology Innovation’s Governance Studies program. Before that, she served on the ethics and social impact committee that helped develop Nigeria’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and has served as an AI policy and ethics advisor for various organizations, including the Africa Union Development Agency and the Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute. She recently received a Ph.D in computer science from Cornell University, where she researched how AI impacts the Global South.

  • EU Council reaches agreement on supercomputer use for AI development - The EU Council has agreed on regulation to expand EuroHPC’s supercomputing role, adding AI factories to boost Europe’s AI ecosystem and support startups. A larger EU supercomputing capacity would then allow AI startups in the EU better resources to innovate and train their models.

The move to invest heavily in AI infrastructure overseas is driven by the desire to tap into the growing global demand for AI technologies, and by the need to have data centers built in regions where the shift to cloud computing is happening, ensuring faster processing times, data privacy and security.

She highlighted power imbalances from an industry dominated by "a handful of surveillance giants" that are "largely unaccountable." These tools are used by employers, law enforcement, and governments with goals that may not benefit society.

  • Arc Search’s new Call Arc feature lets you ask questions by ‘making a phone call’ - Arc Search, the new app from The Browser Company, is introducing a way for users to get quick answers on the go using their voice. The AI-powered feature, Call Arc, works by essentially getting users to place a quick phone call to get answers to queries. To access the feature, open the app and then hold the phone to your ear and begin asking your question. The app will then work to provide you with instant voice responses.
