Alicia's Corner: Tomorrow's Insights, Today - ChatGPT-4o Release

Hello, AiNews.com readers! Thank you for your patience in receiving today’s newsletter. I wanted to be sure to include the details from OpenAI’s new release.

Today, I'm thrilled to introduce the groundbreaking features of the newly released ChatGPT-4o, a leap forward in our interaction with AI, that was announced earlier today. With its cutting-edge advancements, this update is transforming how we communicate with machines, making the experience more intuitive, seamless, and responsive.

Desktop App and Vision Function: The launch of a desktop application is a game-changer, particularly with its new vision function. This feature allows ChatGPT to see your desktop, offering help with data interpretation, coding assistance, and much more right from your screen.

Enhanced Voice Interaction: ChatGPT now converses with no lag time, creating a natural dialogue as if you're speaking to a friend. You can interrupt, and the AI will adapt smoothly, recognizing emotions and even altering its vocal range to sing or add drama to its speech.

Advanced Translation Capabilities: Whether it’s translating a menu shown in a picture or a live conversation, the new translation abilities cover 50 languages, enhancing our global communication capabilities dramatically.

Improved Accessibility and Cost Efficiency: Remarkably, these enhanced features are not only available to premium users but also to free users, making this powerful tool more accessible than ever. For paid users, the benefits are even greater—faster responses, lower costs, and significantly higher rate limits.

Personal Reflections: While we might have expected different updates in today's release, the enhancements we got with GPT-4o are truly impressive. The fluidity of conversation, emotional intelligence, multilingual support, and visual interaction mark a significant step in making our interactions with AI more natural and insightful. It’s not just about technology; it’s about shaping a future where AI helps us bridge communication gaps and enhance our daily tasks.

Now, I’d love to hear from you—how do you envision using these new capabilities in your work or daily life? Let's discuss the potential and perhaps even dream a little about what's next - Head on over to our LinkedIn group and start chatting today!

  • Anthropic released a new prompt tool for Claude - This free tool from Anthropic helps you create better prompts for your AI chatbot. Anthropic has a free prompt library, which includes prompts for various use cases, ranging from very technical to lighthearted and fun. All you have to do is click on the use case you are interested in and then copy and paste the prompt into your chatbot of choice. Describe what you want to achieve, and Claude will use prompt engineering techniques like chain-of-thought reasoning to create more effective, precise and reliable prompts.

  • Anthropic now lets kids use its AI tech — within limits - Anthropic will begin letting teens and preteens use third-party apps (but not its own apps, necessarily) powered by its AI models so long as the developers of those apps implement specific safety features and disclose to users which Anthropic technologies they’re leveraging. “There are certain use cases where AI tools can offer significant benefits to younger users, such as test preparation or tutoring support,” Anthropic writes in the post. “With this in mind, our updated policy allows organizations to incorporate our API into their products for minors.”

  • Microsoft fined $240M - Microsoft's second appeal banning sales of Word with features infringing on i4i's XML-related patents has been rejected, leaving Microsoft to pay $240M. The appeals court held that Microsoft was explicitly aware of i4i's patents before implementing the relevant XML code into Word -- undoubtedly because i4i had been selling an extremely popular XML plugin for years and had approached Microsoft about licensing it. Old versions of Word aren't affected, and current versions of Word 2007 and Office 2010 don't have the offending features.

  • Google’s 3D video conferencing platform, Project Starline, is coming in 2025 with help from HP - In 2021, Google kicked off work on Project Starline, a corporate-focused teleconferencing platform that uses 3D imaging, cameras and a custom-designed screen to let people converse with someone as if they were in the same room — more or less. Now, Google’s bringing Starline to customers in partnership with HP. Google’s also working to integrate Starline with popular videoconferencing services like Zoom and Google Meet, the company says.

  • Bumble dating app allows users to talk to their “dating concierge” to find better matches - Bumble Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd said, in the “near future,” users could talk to an AI “dating concierge” about their insecurities, then the concierge could give them pointers on how to do better. And “if you want to get really out there,” Herd suggested there might even be a day when the concierge could help users find matches by going on dates with other concierges. If the bots have a good date, then their human counterparts get matched up, too.

Kendrick also contributed to the National Black Caucus of State Legislators’ Telecommunications, Science, and Technology Committee and founded Georgia's first bipartisan Technology, Innovation & Entrepreneurship caucus in 2019. • Big Tech sees neurotechnology as its next AI frontier - Neurotechnology using artificial intelligence is opening up new possibilities in healthcare that previously didn’t exist. For decades companies and researchers have been exploring implantable devices that interpret signals in the brain and translate them into words or physical commands. The technology is not new, but now, artificial intelligence is accelerating advances, allowing people affected by debilitating diseases to communicate in ways that were physically impossible before.

  • US aims to stay ahead of China in using AI to fly fighter jets, navigate without GPS and more - The focus on AI has generated public concern that future wars will be fought by machines that select and strike targets without direct human intervention. Officials say this will never happen, at least not on the U.S. side. But there are questions about what a potential adversary would allow, and the military sees no alternative but to get U.S. capabilities fielded fast.
