  • Discord has become an unlikely center for the generative AI boom - Viggle recently went viral on Discord for its AI video generation tool that precisely controls character movements and scene visuals, unlike other text-to-video generators. MidJourney, also on Discord, has 20.3 million members, making it the largest community on the platform. Discord, with about 200 million monthly users, offers startups like Viggle and MidJourney a tech-savvy audience and built-in content moderation without needing to build their own platforms. Despite hosting challenges, Discord enables rapid growth for these startups.

  • Mistral AI Targets US Market With Open-Source Models - Mistral AI aims to capitalize on the growing demand from businesses seeking alternatives to AI models and services provided by major tech companies like OpenAI and Google. The company’s expansion into the U.S. market is gaining momentum - Mistral’s open-source approach, where the underlying code is openly shared and customizable, is seen as a safer and more versatile alternative to closed systems offered by competitors.

  • OpenAI CEO Sam Altman pledges to donate most of his wealth - The Giving Pledge announced that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has joined its list of wealthy philanthropists committed to donating over half their fortunes. Altman says he wants to focus his philanthropic giving on “technology that helps create abundance for people.”

  • OpenAI signs 100K PwC workers to ChatGPT’s enterprise tier as PwC becomes its first resale partner - PwC will become OpenAI’s largest customer, covering 100,000 users, and its first partner for selling enterprise offerings. This deal highlights PwC's evolving business strategy and growth opportunities. PwC has been developing tools around OpenAI's product, but as the technology improves, they plan to buy more components rather than build them. This shift allows PwC to focus on outcomes, transformation, workflows, use cases, and business processes, rather than on assembling APIs for employee experiences.

  • Neural features key to reducing AI hallucinations: Anthropic CEO - The newly discovered features have the potential to drastically alter the behavior of current AI algorithms and provide developers with a deeper understanding of neural networks. “The fact that we can find and alter these features within Claude makes us more confident that we’re beginning to understand how large language models really work.”

  • Criminals’ Adoption of AI Remains Cautious, Report Finds - “Criminals are using generative AI for developing malware and improving social engineering tricks,” says Trend Micro. They use AI language models to create more convincing phishing emails and scam scripts, though AI struggles to impersonate familiar individuals. AI attacks are expected to grow gradually over the next 12 to 24 months as criminals weigh costs and risks. The high expense and technical challenges deter most. Trend Micro advises organizations to fortify their cyberdefenses now, emphasizing proactive security and monitoring of criminal forums.

  • Women in AI: Arati Prabhakar thinks it’s crucial to get AI ‘right’ -Arati Prabhakar is the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and President Biden's science adviser. She was the first woman to direct the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and has also led DARPA. Prabhakar holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Texas Tech University, a master's from Caltech, and in 1984, she became the first woman to earn a doctorate in applied physics from Caltech.

  • AWS and SAP Unlock New Innovation with Generative AI - AWS and SAP have announced a strategic collaboration to enhance cloud ERP experiences using generative AI. The integration of AI models from Amazon Bedrock into SAP AI Core allows customers to access high-performing large language models for customized applications. This partnership aims to accelerate AI adoption and modernize business processes in SAP solutions. Future plans include expanding AI capabilities in SAP’s cloud solutions and applications, particularly in finance and product lifecycle management.

  • Bilingual AI brain implant helps stroke survivor communicate in Spanish and English - Scientists at the University of California, San Francisco have developed a bilingual brain implant that uses artificial intelligence to help a stroke survivor communicate in Spanish and English for the first time. The implant uses a form of AI to turn the man's brain activity into sentences, allowing him to participate in a bilingual conversation and "switch between languages."

  • Arm offers new designs, software for AI on smartphones - ARM Holdings unveiled new chip blueprints and software tools to help smartphones handle artificial intelligence tasks, along with changes to how it delivers those blueprints that could help speed their adoption. The new designs for central processing units (CPUs) that it said are better suited to AI work and new graphics processing units (GPUs). It will also provide software tools to make it easier for developers to run chatbots and other AI code on Arm chips.

  • The Atlantic, Vox Media ink licensing, product deals with OpenAI - The deals give OpenAI added momentum in training its algorithms and protecting against future copyright liability. The Atlantic will collaborate with OpenAI on shaping news presentation in future real-time discovery products and gain access to OpenAI's technology for its experimental Atlantic Labs. Vox Media will use OpenAI's technology to develop internal and audience-facing capabilities and products.
