• UPS lays off 12,000 managers as AI replaces jobs - The company is cutting 12,000 of its 85,000 management jobs because labor costs have risen sharply and inflation has eroded customers' purchasing power. The aim is to save around $1 billion.

• AI-Powered Accounting Startup FundGuard Locks Up $100M - FundGuard, an AI-powered investment accounting platform for asset managers, raised a fresh $100 million round led by Key1 Capital and new investors including Euclidean Capital and funds managed by Hamilton Lane.

• Bedrock Security Launches Platform to Tackle Cloud and AI Data Risks - Powered by what Bedrock calls the AI Reasoning (AIR) Engine, the technology aims to provide a comprehensive solution for organizations seeking to safeguard their sensitive data against emerging threats.

• Google's new AI search results promotes sites pushing malware, scams - Google's new AI-powered 'Search Generative Experience' algorithms recommend scam sites that redirect visitors to unwanted Chrome extensions, fake iPhone giveaways, browser spam subscriptions, and tech support scams. The redirects most commonly lead you to fake captchas or YouTube sites that try to trick the visitor into subscribing to browser notifications.

• Distillery in Scotland using AI to create limited edition whisky - Port Ellen created two rare bottles of whisky, both priced at $50,000, using SmokeDNAi technology to explore the aging process of whisky in casks.

• MITRE Opens New AI Assurance and Discovery Lab - It's mission is to discover and mitigate critical risks in AI-enabled systems that need to operate in increasingly complex, uncertain, and high-stakes environments.

• The future of AI: Personalized systems tuned to your needs, Amazon exec says - Advanced AI won't arrive as a single, monolithic intelligence, but as a whole swarm of personalized systems tuned to individual needs, a key Amazon AI executive predicts. Amazon wants to use its Alexa voice bot as one building block toward that goal.

• Sora: First Impressions - Since OpenAI introduced Sora to the world last month, they’ve been working with visual artists, designers, creative directors and filmmakers to learn how Sora might aid in their creative process. While they have many improvements to make to Sora, they're already getting a glimpse of how the model can help creatives bring ideas to reality.

• With TikTok creator program, AI-spread misinformation pays - TikTok's cash-for-creators program could speed the spread of spammy misinformation on the platform as video makers lean on AI to hook viewers with outlandish images. The crazier the video, the higher the engagement — and now, more engagement directly translates to more dollars.

• Fireworks.ai open source API puts generative AI in reach of any developer - While Fireworks.ai may be lacking the brand name recognition of some of other players, it boasts the largest open source model API with over 12,000 users, per the company. That kind of open source traction tends to attract investor attention, and the company has raised $25 million so far. The company isn’t training foundation models from scratch, but rather helping fine tune other models to the particular needs of a business.

• 0G Labs launches with whopping $35M pre-seed to build a modular AI blockchain - As the crypto space heats back up, so has funding for new startups. 0G Labs, sometimes called ZeroGravity, a web3 infrastructure firm has raised $35 million in a pre-seed round. 0G is creating a modular AI blockchain that aims to alleviate the pain points of on-chain AI applications in the web3 ecosystem, like speed and cost efficiency.

• Large language models can help home robots recover from errors without human help - “LLMs have a way to tell you how to do each step of a task, in natural language. A human’s continuous demonstration is the embodiment of those steps, in physical space,” says grad student Tsun-Hsuan Wang. “And we wanted to connect the two, so that a robot would automatically know what stage it is in a task, and be able to replan and recover on its own.”
