(NORTHFIELD, OH) -- After three years of legal battles, Michael T. Cunningham wasn't fazed when his ``open'' sign wouldn't stand up straight. After wrapping some rope around a metal pole and a shaggy shrub and tying it to the sign, it stood straight -- like a billowing sail.

The owner of Post Time Video & Novelties at 10280 Northfield Road finally opened his store yesterday -- three years late.

``It feels great,'' the 49-year-old North Lawrence resident said from behind his counter that holds sex toys. ``Once we bought it, we were not going to go anywhere.''

Mayor Victor Milani said yesterday was a ``dark day'' for the village. He encouraged residents to protest the opening. There were no protests yesterday, according to Cunningham.

As part of the village's legal agreement with the store, public officials were not permitted to protest the store's opening.

When Cunningham bought the brick building at Northfield Road and May Avenue, he checked the village's zoning code and believed he could open an adult business.
