Vivid Transforming Adult Into Mainstream Business

(VAN NUYS, CA) -- Business 2.0, the business monthly published by Time Magazines, carries an eight-page report on the Vivid Entertainment Group in its June issue. The article concludes that Vivid co-chairman Steven Hirsch has helped revolutionize the adult entertainment industry through innovative business strategies that include the most beautiful actresses signed to exclusive contracts, movies that attract a couples audience and other measures that capitalize on "A seismic shift taking place in America's consumption of sexual entertainment."
The cover line on the magazine announces that "Sex Sells" and the headline on the article proclaims: Prime-Time Porn: Borrowing tactics from the old Hollywood studios, Vivid Entertainment has ditched the plain brown wrapper and is taking the multibillion-dollar sex-film industry mainstream."
Reporter Paul Keegan delves into the inner workings of Vivid, which he concludes is "The biggest XXX film studio in the world." He reports that adult entertainment "Has become so complex and competitive that only the smartest, soberest business minds can prosper. And though the XXX film business was once considered the sleazy underbelly of Hollywood, today Hirsch lectures at the USC Business School and has a Dartmouth grad and MBA as co-chairman of his firm."
Keegan calls Hirsch "The executive most responsible for transforming a disreputable underground industry into a mainstream, multibillion-dollar business. It now sends hard-core movies to TV screens across America through hotel chains like Marriott (Mar) and Hilton (Hlt) and satellite and cable operators Comcast (Cmcsk), DirecTV, and Aol Time Warner (Aol) and is turning unknown strippers and models into celebrities overnight."
To illustrate its story, Business 2.0 publishes stunning photos of Vivid Girls Jenna Jameson, Sunrise Adams, Savanna Samson, and Kira Kener wearing sexy business outfits, plus a new photo of the original Vivid Girl, Ginger Lynn.
Tracing the history of adult entertainment from the 1970s until today, Keegan writes: "Hirsch began with a single brilliant idea that would transform the industry." This, he said, was signing "The biggest star of the day, a classic girl-next-door blond called Ginger Lynn" to an exclusive contract in 1984, much "As MGM's glamorous stars used to do under Hollywood's old contract system."
Vivid has been the pioneer in crossing into mainstream entertainment, with marketing techniques such as billboards on Sunset Boulevard and arranging for Vivid Girls to appear in major music videos, and more recently, with a marketing venture with Pony sportswear, Vivid comic book and hard cover publishing deals, condoms sold under the Vivid brand, Sims snowboards sporting images of Vivid actresses and articulated action figures of the Vivid Girls.
