Public Pressure Halts Controversial Adam & Eve Billboard Campaign

(Atlanta, GA) -- Adam & Eve's series of tasteful yet eye-catching billboard ads touting adult erotica throughout the Atlanta area will be removed beginning today, Monday, Feb. 5, 2001.
Despite protests from Adam & Eve, the nation's largest mail order distributor of erotica, the billboards, which began appearing in early January and were to run through February, are being removed by the billboard company, Infinity Outdoor. Due to complaints from the public, two senators' offices and the president of the Outdoor Advertising Association, Infinity Outdoor has decided not to renew the second month of a two-month agreement to run the billboard ads.
This controversial event is currently being covered by the Atlanta media, including NBC affiliate WXIA-TV, ABC affiliate WSB-TV and CBS affiliate WGCL-TV.
The ads feature the company's web site, adameve.com, alongside a beautiful woman and offer "adult toys and more" for "cheerfully consenting adults." Some of the billboard ads, which appear in four variations at nine locations, promise, "Satisfaction guaranteed."
Phil Harvey, president of Adam & Eve, opposes the removal of the billboard ads. Harvey says the issue boils down to one of freedom of speech. He says such advertising is protected by state law. "To the extent this decision hs resulted from political pressure - either in Georgia or elsewhere - it is a violation of the First Amendment," Harvey said. "We are weighing our options."
